Love it or hate it, the notorious BA i360 is finally finished and opened in Brighton and ready for action. It’s been a long time since the city was so firmly divided about something – with many feeling it cost too much and is an eyesore, but looking at it from a MICE perspective, or in terms of business or leisure tourism, we’re actually firmly in the positive camp.
OK, so from a distance it’s a stick in the sky, there’s no denying that. It’s not a particularly attractive-looking building unless you’re a base jumper, then it probably looks very exciting. But Brighton has a reputation for the quirky and unrealistic and this absolutely fits the bill.
But where the 'doughnut on a stick' (to give it one of its kinder names) really shines is for events. With a pod that can hold up to 200 for a drinks reception during an exclusive flight, a large conference centre at the base, it’s a location to die for (not literally). All the conference spaces have bags of natural daylight and you’re right on the beach, so seaside views all around. And where else does your DDR get you a ride in the highest viewing tower in the world?!
This is a really versatile event space though, and not just for conferences. The Upper Esplanade for example can hold up to 800 for a drinks reception, whilst the beach-side terrace is perfect for summer parties, and the entire beach building and pod can be hired exclusively for up to 1,000 people. For smaller groups, simply add on a flight as part of your Brighton event itinerary and suddenly you’ve got the makings of a real wow-factor event without having to try very hard.
Having the BA tag on the whole thing gives it some class and a stylish feel. The checkin and event spaces are all pretty swish, so it feels upmarket. And the catering and bar strive to offer local food, even wines and bubbly made in the Sussex region.
